General Studies

Our Associate of General Studies (AGS) program lets you master real-world skills in a fast-paced environment, where you'll get a cross-disciplinary education paired with electives that best align with your personal and career goals. You can either get a stand-alone 2-year General Studies degree, or a general education transferable toward a 4-year degree.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The purpose of our general education degree plan is to prepare students to be more well-rounded individuals as they navigate their communities and the society around them.

The program can be completed in person or online.

27 GENERAL EDUCATION CREDITS

  • ENGL 1010 and ENGL 1020
  • MATH 1105
  • 6 credits in Natural Science (labs optional)
  • 6 credits in Social Science
  • 3 credits in Humanities
  • 3 credits in Fine Arts

33 ELECTIVE CREDITS

You should select your electives with consideration of your ultimate educational goal.

  • For those students just seeking SoLAcc's 2-year AGS degree who do not intend to transfer, the 33 elective credits may be selected from across most disciplines offered at SoLAcc. Students seeking the basic AGS degree, without a specific pathway, should follow the Basic General Studies curriculum.

  • For transfer paths through the AGS degree, 12 of the elective credits have recommended courses on the SoLAcc Degree Plan designed to make the majority of the 60 degree credits transferable to most 4-year programs.

  • For those students seeking transfer, the AGS degree is the foundation for what we call "Tracks." Using the "Tracks" SoLAcc provides more detailed advising guides for a number of specifically intended majors students would seek to transfer into in their 4-year educational goals.

  • Completion of a 30-credit Certificate of General Studies (CGS) can provide a solid base of core general education requirements for transfer to a 4-year institution. Studies and recent transfer histories suggest, however, that students are more likely to succeed in most transfer Bachelor's programs if the Associate degree is taken to completion prior to transfer. The CGS may provide an appropriate transfer point after 30-45 credits for certain specific disciplines (music or theatre, for example), and students should consult with advisers on the potential benefits to pathways involving CGS transfer points.

Tracks to a 4-year Degree

Using the AGS degree as the foundation, SoLAcc provides tracks for transfer for a large number of potential and intended majors. While these tracks are not majors, or declared concentrations, they are a set of recommended elective course choices that are designed to advise and guide students to the best selection of elective credits in the AGS to prepare them for the majors they will pursue once at a 4-year institution.  Tracks will prepare students with a focused knowledge and skills area for a specified intended transfer.

The tracks are based on the most common transfer requirements across multiple Louisiana transfer schools (UL Lafayette, etc). SoLAcc updates these tracks and adds additional intended majors periodically, however students should always explore the specific requirements of individual 4-year institutional programs, as well as consult with their SoLAcc adviser, when utilizing these tracks.

Unlike the basic AGS, the elective courses provided in the tracks are not "required" to complete the Associate of General Studied degree at SoLAcc, but are intended to make the AGS degree a best fit for any student's intended major. Students who initially follow one track, but change their intentions, can shift and re-arrange electives during their education at SoLAcc to adjust between different intended transfer paths.
