Career, Transfer, and Advising services offers students the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge and work experience in their field of study through the SLCC Internship Program. Students will be able to apply their course study to the real world and gain valuable experience. These opportunities bridge the gap between the educational and professional worlds, making it easier to transition from college to a career.
An internship can be the foundation to landing a full-time position after graduation and an exciting and rewarding experience. An internship is a great way to test out a career before making a full-time commitment. It can also help students build a valuable network of colleagues and professional references that can help begin their career upon graduating.
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE):
“An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.”

To participate in an internship, students must:
- Be enrolled in a curriculum leading to a degree and have completed 1 semester of their coursework and must be pursuing a major field of study closely related to the job for which he/she is being considered.
- Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the semester of the internship or be a recent SLCC graduate.
- Be in good academic standing with the College by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Be eligible to seek legal employment in the United States or satisfy requirements for practical training in accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
- Be recommended to the Employer by the College faculty and Career Services Staff.
- Meet the Employer's selection requirements (e.g., academic, security clearance, etc.)
