Still Time to Register for Discovery College Summer Camps

Haven’t registered for summer camp yet? No problem. There’s still time to register in South Louisiana Community College’s annual Discovery College summer camps for middle school and high school students.

The camps, planned throughout August cover a variety of topics and are offered throughout the summer at several of SLCC’s campuses across Acadiana. See below for a detailed listing.

Sessions for grades 6-8 will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sessions for grades 9 and above will take place from 12 to 4:30 p.m.

So, You Want to Be a Star?

Lafayette Campus:  June 12 – 16, 12 to 4:30pm

For Grades 9-12 • Cost: $150

Want to find your place in the theatrical spotlight? This camp offers opportunities to learn improvisational acting, to dive into exciting scene and monologue work, and to collaborate on developing, writing and producing short dramatic works, all coming together in a live, on-stage presentation at the end of camp!

Lights, Camera, Action…

Lafayette Campus: July 31 – Aug. 4, 8am to 12:30pm

For Grades 9-12 • Cost: $150

If you’ve ever gone to the movies, dreamt of making your own film to catch the eye of audiences, now is your chance to get started! Camp participants will form small Production Companies, developing one or several short scripts, producing them and carrying each short film from start to finish, learning the basics of pre-production, production and post-production. Are you the next Spielberg? Find out at SLCC this summer.

Claymation: Stop Motion Animation

Lafayette Campus:  June 5 – 9, 8am to 12:30pm and July 24 – 28, 12 to 4:30pm

For Grades 6-8 & 9-12 • Cost: $150

Have you ever see the animated movie ParaNorman? How about Chicken Run or Wallace and Gromit? What did all of these films have in common? They were all made with animated clay characters. If you would like to learn the basics of CLAYMATION, then this is the camp for you! Camp participants will cover writing a script, designing characters and backgrounds, using voice and sound, and filming a short cartoon.

Drawing from Life

Lafayette Campus:  June 12 – 16, 8am to 12:30pm and July 17 – 21, 12 to 4:30pm

For Grades 6-8 & 9-12 • Cost: $150

Grab your pencils and your sketchbook and get ready to draw! Drawing is THE fundamental skill every budding artist needs to develop the talents within. Camp participants will learn how to bring out that inner Michelangelo as they draw landscapes, street scenes, people, and anything else that inspires!

From Pencil to Paint to Masterpiece

New Iberia Campus: July 17 – 21, 8am to 12:30pm

Do you enjoy painting, or would you like to learn? Camp participants will begin a masterpiece by making a pencil drawing on a canvas board and then adding paint. Follow in the footsteps of famous painters…start with pencil and add paint! Plus, all masterpieces will be exhibited in the halls of SLCC!

For Grades 6-8 & 9-12 • Cost: $150

Do you enjoy reading comic books? How would you like to design and draw comic books? If your answers were, "Yes!" and "Yes!", then this is a camp you'll love. Camp participants will learn to draw basic shapes and transform them into comic characters, design and draw cool backgrounds, and put them all together into an adventurous comic book page. Camp participants will also learn about writing, character design, inking, and lettering, and adding color to the finished product. If you've ever dreamed of coming up with the next Spiderman or Batman, then come join us this summer at SLCC!

For Grades 9-12 • Cost: $150

Are you interested in learning about aircraft and how they work? Have you ever flown before? Not only will you have a chance to discover how airplanes and helicopters work, but you’ll experience what it’s like to train to become a pilot! Camp participants will learn about basic aircraft design and repair, how to check an aircraft before take-off (preflight), and what it takes to become a pilot. Join us this summer at SLCC’s International School of Aviation Excellence where the sky is the limit!

Roller Coaster Racer Derby

For Grades 6-8• Cost: $120 (4-day session) / $150 (5-day session)

Have you ever been to an amusement park and experienced the thrill of a roller coaster? Ever wonder how they are built and how they work? Camp participants will use computer-aided design software to create a virtual roller coaster to serve as inspiration for their own 3-D creation. Also, camp participants will use learned engineering skills to construct the biggest and best roller coaster constructed out of paper (yes, paper!) that can hold a marble for racing.

For Grades 11-12 • Cost: $150

Do you enjoy working with your hands? Are you creative and interested in producing and inventing? Camp participants will be introduced to different areas of manufacturing by engaging in hands-on projects. Also, camp participants will become familiar with the basics of industry including welding and automotive technologies. The camp is designed for both males and females interested in repairing their own vehicle or making simple manufacturing repairs.

Ever wonder how R2-D2® and C-3PO® of Star Wars® fame actually function? Camp participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of robotic functions, basic programming, and robotic operations. Coupled with basic programming, each camper will develop basic electronic kit construction skills that include soldering, de-soldering, and components testing. Be prepared to build the robot of your dreams!

Merging the sciences of biology and chemistry together with law enforcement techniques to solve crimes has become an exciting career in today’s society. Camp participants will analyze evidence to solve a crime, identify victims, and convict or exonerate criminal suspects in order to crack cold cases. Camp participants will also learn how to finger print suspects and use analytical thinking skills to piece together the puzzling artifacts of a crime scene.

Like watching those cooking shows? Ever dream of being a world-class chef? Camp participants will learn to apply basic techniques in cooking that will make their families and friends ask, “Did you really cook that?”, when tasting their creations. Get started on the road to becoming the next famous chef! Camp participants interested in attending should bring an apron to protect their clothing.

Have you ever visited that Minecraft website and thought to yourself, “I could have created this myself!” Camp participants will learn the fundamentals of web page development, explore applicable software, learn how to write code and ultimately create their own web page and smartphone app.

Do you enjoy playing video games? Well, why not try something different this summer. Camp participants will learn the basic concepts to create their very own video game. Using computer software to create 2D and 3D imaging, camp participants will design elaborate backgrounds and exciting characters. By camp’s end, camp participants will have designed their very own video game!

Are you interested in learning how to save the life of a family member, friend, or fellow citizen? Do you want to earn some extra money as a certified sitter? Are you interested in becoming a future healthcare professional? Camp participants will learn the basic of CPR by earning a CPR Certification Card from the American Heart Association®. Basic first aid instruction and techniques to recognize early signs of stroke and heart attack will be covered. Camp participants will learn care and treatment for those with diabetes, insect and snake bites, heart disease and a host of other medical conditions. Camp participants will also receive visits from professional healthcare providers.
