Financial Aid

South Louisiana Community College Financial Aid Office

The staff and management of the Financial Aid Office at SLCC are pleased to assist students in applying for Federal Student Aid, processing requests for TOPS, and certifying VA Education Benefits.  To help you with questions regarding disbursements, refunds, book vouchers, or other student account information, please contact the Student Accounts Office directly and they will assist you accordingly.

Before applying for Financial Aid, please read the following carefully.

Pell Grants: The Department of Education makes PELL Grant funds available to eligible students.  PELL Grants do not have to be repaid, and are based on financial criteria submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Students must complete the FAFSA before eligibility can be determined.  The Department of Education does not determine final eligibility, this is done by the school based on Federal guidelines.  Once you have completed the FAFSA, please allow 3-5 days for the Department of Education to send your application to SLCC.  Then, Log into LoLA and click the Financial Aid tab and use the Navigating LoLA guide to determine what additional financial aid requirements you might have.  Keep in mind that the sooner you complete all requirements, the sooner your financial aid can be approved and authorized.

Direct Loans: The Department of Education makes Direct Student Loan funds available to eligible students.  Loans must be repaid; repayment begins when a student drops below 6 credit hours or has been out of attendance for 180-days.  To apply for a Direct Student Loan, students must read Direct Loan Basics for Students, complete the FAFSA, and complete the Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note.  The Department of Education does not determine final eligibility for Direct Loans, this is done by the school based on Federal guidelines.  Once you have completed the FAFSA, please allow 3-5 days for the Department of Education to send your application to SLCC.  Then, Log into LoLA, click the Financial Aid tab and use the Navigating LoLA guide to determine what additional financial aid requirements you might have.  Keep in mind that the sooner you complete all requirements, the sooner your financial aid can be approved and authorized.

TOPS:  TOPS funds are available to students who meet the qualification as set forth by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA).  Responsibility for reporting grades to LOSFA rest with the Registrar’s Office, while requesting TOPS funding is the responsibility of the Financial Aid Office.  Students must complete the FAFSA application in order for LOSFA to determine eligibility for TOPS.

VA Education Benefits: Military veterans may be eligible for Education Benefits through the VA.  Vets must first apply for these benefits through the VA website.  Veterans must also complete the Request to Certify Enrollment form and submit it to the Financial Aid Office before VA Education Benefits will be certified.  Additional VA information is available here.
