Graduating? Here's All You Need to Know about Fall 2017 Commencement

Congratulations on your upcoming SLCC Fall 2017 Commencement Ceremony. Our faculty and staff are very proud of each of you— look forward to celebrating your academic achievements. Please use this sheet as a resource to guide you in the weeks leading up to the commencement ceremony.

Date, Location, and Time

The Fall 2017 ceremony will be held on Thursday, December 14th at 6:00 pm in the Cajundome Convention Center (444 Cajundome Blvd, Lafayette, LA 70506). The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:00 pm, and all graduates must arrive at 5:00 pm. All guests must be seated before doors close; the doors will not be opened while the academic procession is in progress.

The appropriate cap for graduates is the familiar navy blue “mortarboard.” The mortarboard is worn straight on the head with the point of the cap in the center of the forehead. The tassel should hang to the left of the face. Students are free to decorate the top of their graduation cap if desired.

For more information or to place an order, please contact the bookstore at the Lafayette Campus (337-521-8930) or New Iberia Campus (337-367-3733); regalia cannot be ordered online. Sizes cannot be guaranteed, so be sure to order your regalia ASAP.

Honors Graduates and Phi Theta Kappa Graduates

Graduating with Honors and graduating as a Phi Theta Kappa member are two different achievements. Students who are Phi Theta Kappa members often graduate with honors, and Honors Graduates are often Phi Theta Kappa members, but joining PTK does not guarantee that a student will be an Honors Graduate. To graduate with honors, a student must have a Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; these students will be given honors cords on the day of Commencement. PTK students can purchase PTK cords and stoles via the PTK online store: https://www.ptk.org/Store/Graduation.

Diplomas/Degrees

A diploma holder will be issued to each candidate as he or she walks across the stage at the commencement ceremony, and a diploma will be given to each candidate once he or she walks off of the stage (except in the case that a student has a financial or academic hold). If you do not participate in the commencement ceremony, you may pick up your diploma from the Registrar’s Office on the day after commencement, or you may wait for it to be mailed to you; if you choose the latter option, be sure to confirm your mailing address with the Registrar’s Office.

Graduation Pictures

Approximately two weeks after graduation all SLCC graduates will receive sample proofs of their graduation pictures along with order forms. Order forms will include instructions on how to students can order pictures as well as the price options from Candid Campus Photography. This information will be sent to the email on file with SLCC.

Graduation Tickets

SLCC does NOT issue graduation tickets. Students are allowed to invite as many guests as they would like.

Graduation Invitations

The bookstore is not selling official SLCC graduation invitations. Students are encouraged to create and purchase their own through their preferred service/vendor.

Post-Ceremony Celebration

After the commencement recession, you and your family are welcome to enjoy the many refreshments provided; these will be located near the main entrance of the convention center. Flowers as well as SLCC Fall 2017 Graduation t-shirts will be available for graduates and family purchase.
