CAREER SERVICES

Career counseling is a process that helps you develop a better understanding of yourself, your personality, background, abilities, and interests, and helps you make decisions about your professional life, such as choosing a new career or changing directions for a career.

We provide a career assessment for students who are undecided on a career path via Career Coach. You can take an interest inventory assessment that will allow you to explore career paths based on your personal interests. Our staff is available to review your results with you and provide career exploration assistance.

Career and Transfer Fairs are offered during the fall and spring semesters to connect you to employers, four-year universities and scholarship opportunities.

To get a detailed list of companies participating, students should log into their Handshake account with their LoLA username and password.

Students and graduates can seek job placement assistance to find employment opportunities in their field of study. Our office will provide tools and resources to help you build your network and identify ideal postings.

A resume is a summary of your academic and personal experiences, such as extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and/or jobs. When deciding whether to admit or hire you, most universities and businesses want to view your resume. 

Why is a resume important? 

To employers and recruiters, your resume communicates your qualifications as well as your brand—who you are and what sets you apart. In a competitive employment market, you need a resume that will help you stand out from the crowd. The ultimate goal of a strategically targeted, polished resume is to land you an interview.

A mock interview is a practice job interview that resembles how to interact with the hiring manager in real life. In this environment, you can practice answering difficult questions, develop and improve tactics, and improve your communication and response delivery skills. The interview can be conducted in-person, by phone, or virtually.

Career and Transfer Services offers a variety of professional development workshops to prepare students to transition to a 4-year school and enter the workforce. We collaborate with faculty, staff, and student organizations to provide workshops to students and alumni. Career and Transfer Services offers students the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge and work experience in their field of study through the SoLAcc Internship Program.

Students will be able to apply their course study to the real world and gain valuable experience. These opportunities bridge the gap between the educational and professional worlds, making it easier to transition from college to a career.

An internship can be the foundation to landing a full-time position after graduation and an exciting and rewarding experience. An internship is a great way to test out a career before making a full-time commitment. It can also help you build a valuable network of colleagues and professional references that can help you begin your career upon graduating.

Internship Definition

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE):

“An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.”

Internship Eligibility

To participate in an internship, students must:

• Be enrolled in a curriculum leading to a degree and have completed 1 semester of their coursework and must be pursuing a major field of study closely related to the job for which he/she is being considered.
• Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the semester of the internship or be a recent SoLAcc graduate.
• Be in good academic standing with the College by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Be eligible to seek legal employment in the United States or satisfy requirements for practical training in accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
• Be recommended to the Employer by the College faculty and Career Services Staff.
• Meet the Employer's selection requirements (e.g., academic, security clearance, etc.)
