More new students are attending South Louisiana Community College this fall. That’s according to enrollment numbers recently released by the college. The college calculated an 11 percent increase in new students over Fall 2016. This equates to 2,757 new students.
Academic programs at several SLCC campuses felt this growth. For instance, the number of students in General Studies at the Acadian Campus in Crowley tripled. The number of students in the Medical Assistant program there more than doubled as did the number of students in Welding.Increase in new student numbers for Fall 2017 at SLCC.
Several programs at the Evangeline Campus in St. Martinville saw growth as well, including Business and General Studies. The campus also gained new students in its Criminal Justice program and started nearly 30 students in the Practical Nursing program.
In Abbeville at the Gulf Area Campus, the number of students in the Business program doubled and the Cosmetology and Industrial Agricultural Maintenance programs added 20 students each.
All academic programs in Opelousas at the T.H. Harris Campus saw growth in new students, including the Medical Assistant program which added 15 students.
“We’re excited to see this jump in numbers for new students. Our Student Services staff, including recruiters and campus directors, are making more visits to high schools and are engaging with potential students and their parents as often as possible. As a result, we’re seeing increases in new student enrollment,” said Dr. Vincent June, SLCC Vice Chancellor for Student Services and interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
The college’s Student Services Division also introduced Student Success Live orientation sessions this semester. These sessions, held in computer labs, walk students through the admissions process, scheduling classes, accessing financial aid, and more.
“Student Success Live is a hands-on approach to navigating a student’s account. We show them how to access the online portal that includes their schedule of classes, their financial aid information, tuition payment information, and more. Because we are in computer labs, we are able to help them log on to their accounts and do any troubleshooting right there during the session,” said Debbie Tabchouri, SLCC’s Director of Enrollment Management.
The college hosted multiple Student Success Live sessions as the start of the semester approached at each of its campuses. The sessions will be repeated as each new semester starts.
Next month, the Student Services division will begin a series of Open House events at each campus as well. Potential students and parents can learn about academic programs, admissions, and financial aid from SLCC faculty, staff, and students at these Open House events.

- October 16 from 4 – 6 p.m. – Acadian Campus in Crowley October 17 from 4 – 6 p.m. – Evangeline Campus in St. Martinville
- October 18 from 5 – 7 p.m. – T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas October 18 from 5 – 7 p.m. – New Iberia Campus TBA – Franklin Campus and Young Memorial Technical Campus in Morgan City
“Open House allows potential students and their parents to see all of our academic offerings at each campus in one visit,” said June. “The college can showcase its programs and services and potential students can visit with faculty and hear firsthand about its programs.”
