South Louisiana Community College’s Dr. Nellie Prudhomme has been recognized as one of Marquis Who's Who Top Educators for her exceptional work in the field of health education. Her dedication, achievements, and leadership have made her an inspiration to many at SLCC.
“Since joining South Louisiana Community College as an adjunct instructor in 2019, Dr. Prudhomme has continued to make a significant impact in the field of health education. Her wealth of experience and expertise in nursing has been an asset to the college and her students. We are incredibly fortunate to have her at SLCC,” says Carry DeAtley, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health.
Dr. Prudhomme's career in nursing began in 1970 when she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. She later went on to achieve a Doctor of Nursing Science from Louisiana State University in 1997. Over the course of her career, she has worked as a nurse practitioner, health educator, and program coordinator at various universities, including McNeese State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and Southern University and A&M College.
In addition to her work in academia, Dr. Prudhomme served in the United States Army Nurse Corps for 25 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2003. She has been recognized for her military service with several leadership awards.
“Dr. Nellie Prudhomme is amazing on so many different levels as a nurse, educator, leader, and mentor,” states Courtney Metz, Assistant Dean of Nursing Programs and Chief Nursing Officer. “Dr. Prudhomme began her career at SLCC in 2015 and was instrumental in building the college's Registered Nursing program. She retired in 2019 as the department chair of the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN) program but has never truly left us. She remains an instrumental piece of our program as an adjunct instructor and a mentor to the nursing division.”
Dr. Prudhomme's passion for helping others has been a driving force throughout her career. She attributes her success to her upbringing, which instilled in her a sense of responsibility to care for others, particularly in her community.
