South Louisiana Community College and the SLCC Foundation are delighted to announce Cleco as the Benefactor of the Year for the 2023-2024 academic year. This recognition celebrates Cleco’s steadfast commitment and multi-faceted partnership with SLCC in advancing education and opportunities in Acadiana.
For over a decade, Cleco has been an invaluable partner to SLCC, extending beyond financial contributions to engage deeply in various programs and initiatives. One of Cleco’s significant contributions was during the challenging oil and gas downturn in 2018/2019 when the organization created scholarships specifically for dislocated workers in Iberia Parish, demonstrating their commitment to supporting the local community during times of need.
From supporting programs like the Electrical and Power Lineman programs to funding priorities in rural Acadiana, Cleco has consistently been a proactive collaborator in ensuring program quality and fostering talent development. Notably, Cleco was instrumental in the creation and development of SLCC's Power Lineman program, playing a pivotal role in crafting the curriculum and providing essential resources, including donating a bucket truck in 2021 that continues to benefit students in the program.
In addition to their hands-on involvement in program development, Cleco has generously funded scholarships for Electrical and Power Lineman students, contributing tens of thousands of dollars to support student success and access to quality education.
"The SLCC Foundation is proud to recognize Cleco as our Benefactor of the Year for 2023-2024," said Lana Fontenot, executive director of the SLCC Foundation. "Cleco’s longstanding partnership and dedication to creating and boosting educational opportunities in our region align perfectly with our mission to empower students and strengthen our community through education."
"At Cleco, we believe in not only giving back to the communities, but also investing in the advancement of education and making education more accessible," said Andre Guillory, chief customer officer for Cleco. "It's an honor to be recognized for our efforts toward providing access to quality education for students with this prestigious award."
The Benefactor of the Year award is the seventh for SLCC and the Foundation, where an outstanding partnership is recognized each year. Previous honorees include LHC Group and Myers Family Foundation, COX, Gulf Coast Bank, the Hugh and Byrnes Young Foundation, Ochsner Lafayette General (formerly Lafayette General Health), and Elder Outreach.
The SLCC Foundation recognized Cleco during a ceremony on Monday, April 8 at the college’s Crowley Campus, celebrating their outstanding contributions and commitment to education and community advancement.
