New Iberia City Council holding check

South Louisiana Community College (SoLAcc) is thrilled to announce the establishment of the City of New Iberia Scholarship, a generous investment of $100,000 funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This scholarship will provide $5,000 each to 20 students who are selected, offering crucial financial support to help them achieve their academic and career goals.

The scholarship is open to full-time students who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents residing within the city limits of New Iberia. Eligible students can attend any SoLAcc campus and pursue any program or major, as long as they have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. This initiative aims to break down financial barriers and enhance the quality of life for New Iberia residents through education.

"This marks a significant investment by the City of New Iberia into the college education of its residents," stated Lana Fontenot, executive director of the Foundation for SoLAcc. "Offering tuition scholarships to alleviate financial barriers is an excellent strategy to reinvest in the city and enhance the quality of life for its residents."

New Iberia Mayor, Freddie DeCourt, also expressed his support for the scholarship program, "We are committed to the future of New Iberia and our citizens’ futures, and education is a cornerstone of that future. By investing in our people, we are investing in the prosperity and growth of our community. This scholarship will provide invaluable opportunities for our residents and SoLAcc."

The check presentation and announcement took place on July 16th during the City Council Meeting, marking the city's commitment to education and community development.
