South Louisiana Community College (SoLAcc) is soaring to new heights with the announcement of its first-ever mascot: Owls! After a student-driven selection process that also involved input from instructors, staff, and community members, the owl was chosen as a symbol that perfectly reflects the spirit and values of SoLAcc.
The Owl: A Mascot for Wisdom, Adaptability, and Focus
Owls are known across cultures as symbols of wisdom, intelligence, and learning—all qualities that align beautifully with SoLAcc’s students. Here’s why the owl is a perfect fit for SoLAcc:
- Keen Vision in Darkness: Just as owls navigate the night with clarity, SoLAcc students are armed with support to find their way, even when the path seems uncertain.
- Adaptability: Owls thrive in various environments, just like our students who balance academics, work, and personal life with determination.
- Focus and Determination: Owls are known for their quiet, deliberate movements—a reflection student success being the cornerstone of our mission.
- Curiosity and Wonder: With their mysterious allure, owls inspire the pursuit of knowledge, sparking curiosity that mirrors the learning experience at SoLAcc.
- Nocturnal Learners: Owls are nocturnal, embodying the idea that learning happens at any time, day or night— because SoLAcc’s students need a flexible approach to education.
A New Chapter in SoLAcc’s History
This marks a significant moment in SoLAcc’s history, as it is the first time the college has ever chosen an official mascot. Along with our new colors, vibrant look, and refreshed brand, the owl represents the next chapter of our journey.
"I'm excited that we finally have a mascot and I think the owl is a true fit. It represents everything we're about—staying focused, adapting to challenges, and learning every step of the way. It connects us all and shows off what makes our community special,” explained Tanjunika James, SoLAcc’s Student Government Association President.
“At SoLAcc, we’re always listening to our students, and they thought it was time for a mascot to represent who they are now,” said Anne Falgout, Director of Strategic Communications. “The owl is the perfect symbol of the wisdom, resilience, and adaptability that our students embody every day.”
