South Louisiana Community College (SoLAcc) is proud to announce the establishment of two scholarships exclusively for students from Evangeline Parish attending the Ville Platte Campus. These scholarships, made possible through generous contributions from local organizations and community leaders, offer significant financial support for students pursuing their education at SoLAcc.
The two new scholarships include the Rotary Club of Ville Platte Scholarship and the Chauncey James Fontenot Memorial Scholarship in Welding, both aimed at providing financial assistance to deserving students in the region.
Rotary Club of Ville Platte Scholarship
The Rotary Club of Ville Platte Scholarship is open to all students residing in Evangeline Parish and enrolled at SoLAcc's Ville Platte Campus. The scholarships, valued at $1,000 each will be funded by the Rotary Club of Ville Platte, using a District Grant the club secured. Two scholarships will be awarded annually, supporting students in any program at the campus.
“We’re incredibly proud to support the students of Evangeline Parish in furthering their education at SoLAcc,” said Bob Manuel, Rotary Club of Ville Platte President. “This investment in our local students reflects our club’s commitment to the community.
Past President, Brian Ardoin, and current President of St. Landry-Evangeline United Way, who spearheaded this effort; played a key role in securing the Rotary District Grant, “Providing educational opportunities like this is at the core of what our Rotary Club stands for, and we’re honored to partner with our local chapter of SoLAcc to make this happen,” Ardoin shared.
Chauncey James Fontenot Memorial Scholarship in Welding
The Chauncey James Fontenot Memorial Scholarship in Welding was established in memory of Chauncey Fontenot, a passionate young welder from Evangeline Parish. The $1,000 scholarship, funded by Roderick “Roddy” Fontenot, owner of Roddy Fontenot Welding and Chauncey’s father, is open to Evangeline Parish residents enrolled in the Technical Diploma in Welding program at SoLAcc's Ville Platte Campus.
“I created this scholarship in honor of my son Chauncey to encourage more young people to pursue careers in the trades,” said Roddy Fontenot. “Welding is not just a job; it’s a skill that can provide a good living and build a future. I’ve been talking with high school counselors across Evangeline Parish to get the word out and make sure students know about the opportunities available to them at SoLAcc.”
Both scholarships are made possible through the Foundation for SoLAcc, a non-profit organization that partners with individuals, businesses, and organizations to provide financial support for SoLAcc students. The Foundation is dedicated to helping students achieve their educational and career goals through scholarships, programs, and services.
