Nearly 600 students are Fall 2017 candidates for graduation from South Louisiana Community College. Students received degrees during the Fall 2017 Graduation ceremony on Dec. 14.

Once again, the Welding program at South Louisiana Community College's Opelousas campus is helping the community for Thanksgiving. The T. H. Harris Campus Welding Department held its annual Thanksgiving Drive benefiting over 30 families, as well as the homeless shelters in Opelousas. Instructor David Charles and the Welding department have been leading this drive for almost 20 years. The drive for the last seven years has been dedicated to the memory of former welding student Eddie "Gator" Dekerlegand.

The Financial Aid Office is implementing a new appointment process effective, Monday, November 27, 2017. The new procedure will allow students to set up face-to-face and/or phone appointment times. By utilizing the appointment system, it will minimize the wait time for students to receive individual counseling sessions.

The Center for Minority Excellence is hosting a Math Blitz event to offer students some help in Math. The event will take place Friday, Nov. 17 in room 102 of the Ardoin Building in Lafayette. A Q&A session starts at 8:45 a.m. and is followed by tutoring sessions for LFMA 0083 and 0093; and Math 1105 College Algebra.

A shortage of registered nurses is looming as baby boomers enter retirement. The U.S. Bureau of Labor projects the need for nearly 650,000 replacement nurses in the workforce bringing the total number of job openings for nurses to 1.09 million in 2024. South Louisiana Community College is creating a program at its T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas to address this shortage locally.

Nearly 40 employers and universities will be at SLCC’s T.H. Harris Campus Thursday, Nov. 9 for a Career and Transfer Fair. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. The T.H. Harris Campus is located at 332 E. South Street in Opelousas.

South Louisiana Community College, the board of directors for Local Workforce Development Board #40, and area parish presidents in Acadiana are partnering to improve workforce development in the region. The collaboration – a first for a community college in Louisiana – falls under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) enacted in 2014.

Students will have the opportunity to visit with transfer recruiters from 4-year universities tomorrow. The Transfer Recruitment Fair will take place from 9 a.m. - noon in the Devalcourt Lobby on the Lafayette Campus. Students can learn about the transfer process and what is needed to smoothly transfer after graduation.

Nearly 30 employers will be at the Ville Platte Civic Center on Wednesday, Oct. 18 for a Career Fair. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. The Ville Platte Civic Center is located at 704 N. Soileau Street.

Practical Nursing students from South Louisiana Community College's C.B. Coreil Campus in Ville Platte received hands-on training today. The campus partnered with Savoy Medical Center in Mamou so that PN students could help administer the flu shot to residents of Evangeline Parish.

South Louisiana Community College and United Blood Services are teaming up for a series of blood drives across Acadiana. Eight drives are planned in the coming weeks.

South Louisiana Community College is offering current SLCC students the chance to win a Finish Line Scholarship on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the conclusion of the college’s Striding for Scholarships 5K and 1-mile Fun Run.

The Corporate College division of South Louisiana Community College will be offering a 10-week project management course beginning Thursday, Sept. 21.

More new students are attending South Louisiana Community College this fall. That’s according to enrollment numbers recently released by the college. The college calculated an 11 percent increase in new students over Fall 2016. This equates to 2,757 new students.

Citizens in Evangeline Parish who want to earn their high school equivalency diploma will be able to do so close to home. South Louisiana Community College is expanding its Adult Education Program to its C.B. Coreil Campus in Ville Platte.

More than $30,000 in scholarships was awarded to students at South Louisiana Community College for the current Fall semester.
