Drafting & Design Technology

Drafting and Design technicians make our house plans come to life, assist architects in drawing commercial building layouts, and play a vital role in construction, oilfield operations, and manufacturing.

Our Technical Diploma (TD) and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Drafting & Design Technology let you master real-world skills in a hands-on environment, where you'll learn how to bring ideas to life using design principles and concepts, analyze and interpret data to produce precise drawings, and apply written and graphic communication skills.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Students are able to transform ideas to paper using basic manual and computer-aided design principles and concepts, analyze and interpret project information and data to produce precise, accurate drawings, and apply written and graphic communication skills used in technical drawings.

Relevant coursework includes Fundamentals of Manual Drafting, Computer-Aided Design, Industrial Drafting, Architectural Drafting, and Civil/Structural Drafting.

ACCREDITATION

The Technical Diploma (TD) and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Drafting & Design Technology program at South Louisiana Community College has been accredited by The Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) since 2009. The Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering remains the only accreditor in the United States of Science/Technology Management and Applied Engineering programs, reinforcing its leadership in shaping these disciplines.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Whether you want to work as an architectural, mechanical, electrical, civil, pipe, or manufacturing drafter, SoLAcc will prepare you for life in drafting after graduation. Graduates in our Drafting and Design Technology program will be able to:

  • Evaluate basic data and information needed in the preparation of manual and computer-aided drawings.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency with 70 percent accuracy in all training and skills necessary in manual, two-dimensional and three-dimensional computer-aided design to produce technical drawings in a variety of related professional drafting fields.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate attitudes, behaviors and communication skills as expected in a professional environment through active participation in class activities and projects.

  • Mechanical Drafter: $78,580
  • Architectural & Civil Drafter: $78,190
  • Electrical Drafter: $65,360
