STEP PROGRAM
The goal of the Strategies to Empower People (STEP) Program is to provide opportunities for work-eligible families of FITAP to receive job training, employment and supportive services to enable them to become self-sufficient. STEP is a service of, and administered by the Louisiana Department of Child and Family Services.
To determine whether or not you may be eligible to participate in STEP funding, please contact the DCFS office closest to your campus. If you are eligible for STEP participation SLCC will work with DCFS and the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Aid (LOSFA) to process your STEP eligible payments. The following provides guidelines for the process:
You must meet with DCFS to determine eligibility. Once your eligibility is determined by DCFS, you will notify the SLCC Financial Aid Office that you will be using STEP benefits. SLCC Financial Aid will determine the extent of STEP funds for which you are eligible based on other funds received, such as PELL, GO-Grant, or Direct Loans. Financial Aid will then authorize the STEP Funds. After the census date of each semester, Student Accounts will then request funds from DCFS. Once funds are received, Student Accounts will refund the student within 14 days.
Tuition and Mandatory Fees: Please note that if you are eligible for STEP funds for tuition and mandatory fees, the Financial Aid office will request those funds upon your notice of eligibility. No additional documentation is required.
Please allow two (2) weeks from the time the funds are determined by the Financial Aid Office for funds to be authorized on your Student Account.
