Student life can occasionally become stressful and unpleasant. Students may find it challenging to perform at their best while dealing with stress related to their studies, finances, or social lives. Any additional stress like trauma, sickness, grief, and prejudice can make things more difficult.

- Crisis intervention
- Short-term counseling for such matters as: anxiety, depression, loneliness, identity, stress management, time management, eating concerns, relationship concerns, grief and loss, family stress, sexual orientation, college-related transition, coping skills, developmental issues, self-esteem, and personal growth and development.
- Skills development for academic success, such as: time management, motivational skills, and reduction of performance-related anxiety (such as test anxiety).
- Support and brief counseling for students recovering from sexual assault and/or domestic violence.
- Assessment and referral to other campus resources and community resources.
LIMITATIONS
Our office does not:
- Provide long-term intensive counseling and psychotherapy.
- Provide treatment for alcohol and drug use/abuse. Counselors will meet with students seeking such treatment for a brief time to provide support, assess the students’ needs, and assist them with referrals to off-campus resources.
- Prescribe or monitor psychotropic or any other medications. At students’ request, the coordinator will make a referral to a community resource for medication evaluation.
- Offer after-hours emergency services. Students should go to their local emergency department.
WHEN TO SEEK COUNSELING
Although everyone experiences stress, anxiety, and depression to some degree, it might be time to seek professional help when you experience symptoms that lead to:
- Withdrawal from activities and isolating from others
- Using substances to cope
- No longer enjoying activities
- Changes or disruptions in sleep or appetite
- Experienced/Witnessed trauma
- Difficulty regulating emotions
- Suicidal thoughts or self-harming behaviors
- Struggling to build and maintain relationships
- Inability to work or go to school or not performing effectively
MISSION STATEMENT
Counseling Services at SoLAcc provide psychological support to students as they pursue their academic and personal goals. Our department realizes that the college years pose both challenges and opportunities. We would like to enhance the quality of each student’s experience at South Louisiana Community College. The ultimate goal is to help you grow in self-understanding, so that you can better cope with your immediate situation and with future decisions. Our services are free of charge to students who utilize the outside referral sources.

Counseling Services is located in the Student Success Center, in the same area as the advising offices.
Appointments can be made by completing the (consent to treatment) or using our online referral form.

The SoLAcc webpage is designed to provide a safe place for members of the College community to report concerns, centralize reporting, maintain records, and connect important information. Reports are reviewed during normal business hours. Reports are not monitored after hours, on weekends, or during official College holidays.
Completing a form on this site does not constitute filing an official police report. To file an official police report, please contact the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, 337-232-9211 or Lafayette Police Department, 337-291-8600.
You can also use our online referral form to report issues related to counseling services.
All sessions/records are confidential. College, staff, faculty, law enforcement officials, parent, potential employers, and others have no access to any of your records without your written permission. Please note, there are exceptions to confidentiality:
- If you are likely to harm yourself or others unless protective measures are taken.
- If you lack the capacity to care for yourself.
- When there is reasonable suspicion of abuse of children, dependent adults or the elderly.
- When there is a valid court order for disclosure of client files.
Counseling services are free for enrolled students. This includes between breaks when continuously enrolled.
