“The LHC Group/Myers Family Foundation Endowed Professorship I in Nursing will help SLCC stay current with life-saving techniques. SLCC's nursing program is taking a monumental step forward in ensuring the competence and confidence of its students in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and BLS (Basic Life Support) training.”
De Sha Lee, Practical nursing Instructor, is one of four candidates selected as endowed professors for the academic year, 2023-2024. Lee explains that this endowment is making a significant impact by alleviating the financial burden on SLCC nursing students and enriching their learning experiences.
The SLCC Foundation has recently approved over $120,000 in disbursements from endowments. This substantial disbursement includes $38,592.57 dedicated to professorships, which will be immediately disbursed to the college. Additionally, $82,861.78 has been allocated for scholarships, which will be provided to students after they are awarded. Other instructors selected include Rebecca Philbrook who was awarded the H&B Young Foundation Endowed Professorship in Tech Studies, Graciana Breaux who was awarded the LHC Group/Myers Family Foundation Endowed Professorship II in Nursing, and Paige Mcgee who was renewed for the Glenn Morgan Criminal Justice Endowed Professorship.
Lee says that one of the key aspects of the Endowed Professorship I in Nursing is its commitment to providing cost-effective Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers training. This ensures that SLCC students receive high-quality CPR training, preparing them for real-world situations where their skills may be called upon to save lives. Moreover, the endowment equips the nursing program with state-of-the-art CPR and BLS, equipment, guaranteeing that students have access to the latest resources to hone their life-saving skills.
“The impact of this endowment extends far beyond the classroom,” Lee says. “These students will graduate not only with diplomas but also with the invaluable ability to save lives.”
These endowments are a testament to the transformative power of funds dedicated to higher education. It highlights how donations can enhance the learning opportunities at SLCC, ultimately benefiting the entire community by producing highly skilled and confident professionals.
