Medical Assistant
Our Medical Assistant program is a great way to begin your career in healthcare. Medical Assistants draw blood, give life-saving medicine, and help mend our loved ones.
Whether you want to work in a physician's office, clinic, hospital, or laboratory, or behind the scenes in insurance or medical records, SoLAcc will prepare you for life as a Medical Assistant after graduation.

WHEN/WHERE: Starts in the Fall at our Crowley, Ville Platte, Abbeville, New Iberia, Opelousas, and Franklin campuses.

- Some courses have prerequisites, which must be completed before enrolling into upper level courses and continuing in the program.
- Upon completion of this program, graduates are eligible to sit for the National Certification exam for Medical Assistants.
- Supervised and/or preceptor based clinical externships are included.

Program Requirements
- Submit a history and physical examination report certifying student is physically and emotionally fit for the program.
- Provide recent (less than one year) TB skin test or chest x-ray.
- Submit proof of current immunizations.
- Pass a background check and a drug screen.
- Possess a CPR card for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
- Purchase the required class and clinical uniform(s), and supplies as outlined by the instructor.
- Adhere to HIPAA and other confidentiality clauses involving client care or clinical training.
- Arrange transportation to clinical sites, any additional trainings, or any extra-curricular activities.

Application Process
STEP 1.
NEW STUDENTS: Apply to the Medical Assistant program at South Louisiana Community College by completing the SoLAcc online application for the term in which the program begins.
Applicants must submit the materials below to admissions@solacc.edu. Applicants should keep copies of all documents that are submitted throughout the application process. Submitted materials will not be returned.
- High school transcript or HiSET/GED completion
- Verification of registration with Selective Service (if required)
- Proof of immunizations or a waiver
CURRENT STUDENTS: Students who are currently taking classes at SoLAcc should submit a change of major form for the MA Program to the Registrar’s Office and cc the Department Chair, Monica.David@solacc.edu, instead of completing a new online application.
The Medical Assistant program has limited seating; therefore, admission to the college does not guarantee a seat in the program.
Students must not be currently serving under any court-imposed order of supervised probation, work release, school release or parole in conjunction with any felony conviction(s) or plea agreement.
Applicants must be 18 years of age due clinical site regulations.
We recommend that all Financial Aid recipients meet with a financial aid advisor to verify that they have aid remaining to complete the program. SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) must be met each term to continue receiving aid.
STEP 2. Upon admission to SoLAcc, all applicants must register for and attend a Student Success Live session to schedule classes. Applicants may contact the main office at the campus they wish to attend for more information about upcoming sessions or monitor the SoLAcc website for upcoming dates and registration links. At the Student Success Live, students will view a short presentation video from the Medical Assistant Department and receive the MA Requirements handout with additional information regarding the following requirements:
- Criminal Background Check (required 3 weeks prior to the first day of the semester for MA courses)
- Health History, Physical Examination, TB Skin Test, and Immunizations (due 1st day of class)
- CPR for HealthCare Providers
- Urine Drug Screen
STEP 3. Prepare for classes by working towards obtaining MA Program requirements.
